Course Description: This presentation is intended to be a practical resource for professionals and peers engaged in community-based substance use recovery work. It is directed at organizations and individuals who are relatively new to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) activities and practices. In this presentation, participants will learn how to create more welcoming and respectful spaces for Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) who are in recovery or seeking recovery from substance use disorder. It is offered in the spirit of collaboration and with a shared sense of responsibility to eliminate barriers to SUD peer recovery support, particularly for youth and young adults in BIPOC communities.
Learning Objectives:
- Understanding of diversity as a strength that will enrich the recovery movement in addition to improving the lives of the individuals who are accessing services.
- Awareness of the different stages of the cultural competency continuum and how to take action to achieve organizational change.
- Participants will be able to identify tools that recovery organizations can use to create effective and inclusive outreach plans to increase engagement with and involvement within diverse communities.
